Bob was the youngest of the five children of David Lewis and Gertrude Keyes Buttleman. He graduated as valedictorian from Montague High School in 1935 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1937. He served first in the Caribbean (1937-1940) and later in the South Pacific (1940-1946). Early in his Navy career, while on leave in Washington D.C., he met Alice Marie Milligan. Following a long engagement, they married in Gardnerville, Nevada on July 18, 1941. Following World War II, the young couple set up residence in Berkeley, California and began their family.
In 1951, the Buttlemans moved to Dallas, Texas. For many years, Bob was employed by State Farm Insurance Company. He was also a member of the Dallas Real Estate Brokers Association and an active investor in the Hillsboro, Texas oil industry. Over the years, Bob and Alice were active members of Dallas’ First Presbyterian Church and Tyler Street Methodist Church. In the late 1970s, they became involved with Christ for the Nations Institute, where they lived on campus for over a dozen years. In 2000, after a third career working for the U.S. Bureau of the Census, Bob and Alice retired to Cordova, Tennessee. Following Alice’s death in 2002, Bob moved to West Chester, Ohio, where he has since lived with daughter Barbara Deatherage, her husband, Dennis, and son, Artyom.
A former Republican Precinct Chairman in Dallas, Bob loved to discuss politics and remained an engaged observer of world affairs well into his early 90s. He loved to play the piano and sing sacred music, and enthusiastically pursued computer technology.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alice and his four siblings, Mildred, Ellowyn, Harold, and Clayton. He is survived by his daughters Dr. Kay Forest (Mary Haddad), Barbara (Dennis) Deatherage, and Nancy (Glen) Guilbeau; grandsons Todd (Megan Cooney) Deatherage, Jonathan (Erin) Deatherage, Artyom Deatherage, and Lukas Guilbeau; as well as great-grandchildren Cara and Emmet Deatherage.
